Example text

This chapter briefly reviews the basic principles and practicalities of using these methods by way of an introduction to discussing their special contribution to new technologies for survey processing. L. 1 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF MULTIVARIATE DESCRIPTIVE METHODS The common principle to all exploratory multivariate statistical methods is the following: Each one of the two dimensions of a rectangular table of numerical data can be used to define distances (or proximities) among the elements of the other dimension.

Thus numbering textual sequences has the result of simplifying lexicometric processing. Additionally, the volume needed for storage in the computer is considerably reduced. 2 Corpus P In order to provide simple illustrations of the definitions given in this chapter, we work on a text called "corpus P", where capital letters are used to represent words whose exact style and meaning are of no significance. However this simple "text" does provide some examples of redundancies that we shall use later on.

Sometimes the following statement is made: The product of rank and frequency is approximately constant. L. Handley, yield: rank 10 rank 100 rank 1000 rank 10000 frequency frequency frequency frequency 2653 265 26 2 A Pareto chart furnishes a very good summarization of the information contained in frequency distribution. On the vertical axis, with rulings in a logarithmic scale, the frequency of repetition F, which varies from 1 to Fmax maximum frequency of the corpus, is entered. On the horizontal axis, again in a logarithmic scale, the number N(F) of words repeated at least F times in the corpus is entered for each of the values of frequency F between 1 and Fmax· The resulting curve is a cumulative curve.
